Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Story
According to the story in Shiv Puran, in ancient times there was a demon whose name was Bhima and he lived in the forest with his mother Karkati. After growing up, Bhima asked his mother about his father? Karkati told him that Mahabali Kumbhakarna was his father, who was killed by Shri Ram. After the death of my husband, I started living with my parents.
Once my parents wanted to eat one of the disciples of Rishi Agastya and Rishi Agastya was a very big devotee of Lord Vishnu. So, he burnt my parents to ashes. After the death of my parents, I started living in the forest.
After knowing the reason for the death of his relatives, that demon decided to take revenge. Bhima did Lord Brahma Ji penance for 1000 years and Lord Brahma Ji gave him a boon to become more powerful after being pleased from his penance.
After getting boon, he first defeated Indra and finally defeated Lord Vishnu too. But he wanted to conquer the whole earth, that’s why he first attacked the king of Kamrup (Assam) called Sudakshin. He imprisoned the king after defeating him. King Sudakshin was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, so he started doing penance in prison by making a Shivling of Lord Shiva. After getting this news, Bhima reached there and raised the sword to destroy the Shivling. Then suddenly Lord Shiva appeared and cut the demon’s sword with his bow, and killed the demon.
Then all the gods and sages appeared there and requested Lord Shiva to stay here forever for the welfare of the people. Lord Shiva accepted their request and established here in the form of Jyotirlinga. Because he battled with the demon Bhima at this place, that is why the name of this place came to be Bhimashankar. Maybe you don’t know that the Jal Abhishek of this Jyotirlinga continues for 24 hours and in the rainy season, the Jyotirlinga is completely submerged in water.
